How to Measure Wardrobe Door Opening Correctly

A wardrobe door can look beautifully proportioned in a showroom yet feel awkward at home if the opening has been measured incorrectly. A few millimetres can affect whether sliding panels overlap properly, a swing door clears nearby furniture, or a bifold system folds without catching. Knowing how to measure wardrobe door opening is the first step towards a refined, practical fit that makes daily storage easier.

For Singapore homes, where bedrooms in HDB flats and condominiums often need every available centimetre to work harder, accurate measurement matters even more. The goal is not simply to record the biggest possible opening. It is to understand the usable space, the floor and wall conditions, and the door movement your room can accommodate.

Start with the finished opening, not the existing door

Measure the wardrobe opening after the old doors, tracks, trims and loose fittings have been removed where possible. Existing doors are not a reliable guide to the size of a replacement system. They may have been made with different overlaps, tracks or clearances, and the opening itself may not be perfectly square.

Use a good-quality steel tape measure rather than a fabric tape. A laser measure can be useful for checking longer spans, but a tape gives a more dependable reading around recessed sides, skirting and uneven surfaces. Record every figure in millimetres. This avoids confusion later when discussing made-to-measure fabrication and installation.

Before measuring, clear items from the wardrobe floor and move any freestanding furniture that could affect access. If there is carpet, a raised vinyl floor, a platform bed, a pelmet or a false ceiling nearby, include these features in your assessment. They can change the available height or the route a door needs to travel.

How to measure wardrobe door opening width

Measure the internal width of the opening at three points: across the top, the middle and the bottom. Take each measurement from the finished surface on one side to the finished surface on the other. Do not assume the widest measurement is the correct one to use.

Walls, built-in carpentry and wardrobe frames are often slightly out of square. If the width differs between the three readings, note all of them. For most systems, the narrowest point determines what can physically fit, while the wider readings help an installer plan allowances, fillers or adjustments.

If the wardrobe has a centre divider, measure each bay separately. A left and right compartment can look identical but vary enough to affect door sizing. Likewise, measure around any fixed side panels rather than from the outer edge of decorative trims.

For sliding wardrobe doors, the final panel widths will be wider than the visible opening because doors need to overlap. The amount of overlap depends on the track system, number of panels and chosen profile. This is why measuring an existing sliding panel and ordering the same size is risky. The opening dimension is the essential starting point, but the finished door calculation should account for the complete hardware system.

Measure height in more than one place

Next, measure the opening height at the left, centre and right. Take the measurement from the finished floor level to the underside of the top panel, lintel or ceiling structure where the track or door system will sit.

Use the shortest height as the critical reference if the floor or ceiling is uneven. A wardrobe door cannot be taller than the lowest point of the opening, even if there is more room elsewhere. This is especially relevant in older flats, where floors can slope subtly, or after renovation work has introduced new flooring levels.

Check whether the finished floor has already been installed. If laminate, vinyl, tiles or a threshold will be added later, the opening height will reduce. Measuring before these details are finalised can lead to doors that are too tall once the renovation is complete.

For sliding systems, allow for the top and bottom tracks as well as the adjustment range within the rollers. For swing and bifold doors, hinges, top gaps and bottom clearance all influence the final leaf height. A professional installer will confirm the required tolerances for the selected system, but accurate site measurements allow that process to begin on the right footing.

Check the floor condition

Look closely at the wardrobe floor, not just its height. A sliding door track needs a stable, level base so panels glide quietly and stay aligned. A floor that dips, has cracked tiles, or includes a pronounced grout line may need a packing solution or a different track arrangement.

For swing doors, consider whether the floor finish will obstruct the door at its lowest point. A thick rug may be easy to move, but a raised threshold, bathroom-style floor strip or poorly positioned skirting is a permanent obstacle. The more accurately these conditions are identified before ordering, the cleaner the final installation will be.

Measure depth and internal obstructions

The opening width and height tell only part of the story. Measure the wardrobe depth from the front of the opening to the back wall, especially if you are installing internal drawers, pull-out racks or deeper hanging systems. Standard hanging clothes need sufficient depth to sit comfortably behind the doors without being compressed.

Also identify anything that projects into the opening or the door path. Common examples include skirting boards, cornices, electrical sockets, wardrobe lights, handles from adjacent cabinets and protruding shelving. A sliding door may cover the opening neatly but still clash with a bedside table that sits too close to the wardrobe front.

Where skirting boards run into the wardrobe sides, measure their thickness and height. You may need a filler panel, a notch in the side treatment or a door layout that sits forward of the obstruction. Hiding such details is part of achieving a polished built-in look, rather than an installation that appears forced into place.

Match the measurement to the door type

The best wardrobe door is shaped by the room as much as by personal style. Measure with the intended operating method in mind.

Sliding wardrobe doors

Sliding doors are an excellent choice for compact bedrooms because they do not require front clearance to open. However, they need adequate width for overlapping panels and a suitable top and bottom track. Measure the clear opening, but also check the external wall space and ceiling line where tracks, pelmets or side finishes may be installed.

A two-panel arrangement is often clean and simple, while three or more panels can suit wider wardrobes. More panels can make a large opening easier to access in sections, although each panel becomes narrower and track design becomes more important.

Swing wardrobe doors

Swing doors provide full access to the wardrobe interior and can work well where there is generous circulation space. Measure the opening, then measure the clear area in front of it. The door must open without hitting a bed frame, desk, chest of drawers or another door.

Door width matters here. A very wide swing leaf can feel premium, but it is heavier and needs a larger turning radius. Narrower leaves reduce the clearance needed and may be more practical for a tight bedroom layout.

Bifold and folding wardrobe doors

Bifold doors reduce the projection of a fully open swing door while offering wider access than a sliding door at one time. They need accurate width measurements because panel divisions, hinges and folding direction affect how the system stacks.

Check for nearby furniture on both sides of the opening. A bifold door uses less forward space than a swing door, but its folded panels still need a clear zone at the side when open.

Record the details an installer needs

A clear measurement record saves time and reduces avoidable surprises. Alongside the width, height and depth readings, take straight-on photographs of the opening and wider photographs of the surrounding room. Include close-ups of uneven edges, skirting, electrical points and floor transitions.

It also helps to note the material of the surrounding structure. Is the wardrobe built within masonry walls, attached to a false wall, or framed by existing carpentry? This can influence fixing methods and finishing options. A door that technically fits may still be frustrating if it blocks access to drawers, creates a pinch point beside the bed, or prevents two people from using the wardrobe comfortably. Good measurements should protect both the installation and the everyday experience of the room.
